Melaka Trip (23/9/11 - 25/9/11) - Day 2

Second day in Melaka, we wait for our another group of friend arrive. After they arrived, we ask the hostel staff for rental of 9 bicycles. The hostel only can let us 3 bicycles. But the staff is very helpful, she ask other hostels whether have extra bicycle to let us. Finally she able to get us 8 bicycles. Then we start today journey by bicycle.

First stop for today breakfast is Donald & Lily Nyonya Food Stall at Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock.

In Melaka, few foods you have to try, Chicken Rice Ball, Satay Celup and Nyonya Food. These are the local famous food in Melaka. However, we have try the Chicken Rice Ball and Satay Celup before so these 2 are not our priority of food hunting. In Melaka, there have many Nyonya Food Restaurant and the price are quite expensive. I was so keen to try this nyonya food stall.

Cendol -Very nice combination of gula Melaka. A bit sweet but after the ice is melted, it taste just right. (RM2.50 / bowl)
Mee Siam - Fried mihun in Thai style. Not so spicy and a bit sour because of the lime juice. You can choose not to squeeze the lime but it will taste quite normal. (RM3.50 / plate)
Nyonya Laksa - Look spicy but it not. Very tasty. One of the best Nyonya laksa we tried. (RM3.50 / bowl)
Rojak - Like the 'Wu-Xiang' we tried at Tong Bee Stall yesterday. It just that it don't have the roasted bean curd.
Nasi Minyak - This is the today special. This is 'oil rice' served with 'chicken rendang' and mixed vege. The rendang is a bit different from what we ate from Malay stall. It is less spicy but more fragrant. One of my favourite. (RM6.80)
Pongteh Ayam with rice - one of the famous Nyonya food. The chicken (ayam) is cooked with potato in bean paste. This dish is a bit sweet but is very tasty too. (RM6.50 / set)

A very satisfying experience we had for our breakfast. This is worth to recommend. Food is good and the staff is nice also.

Actually it is not far from Reddish Dutch Square to Mahkota Parade. We parked our bicycle at Reddish Dutch Square and walk to Mahkota Parade thru the Kota A'Famosa. The distance is just around 5 minutes walking distance.

Now, is time to lunch. As I said before, Nyonya food is one of the Melaka famous local food. So this time we targeted Nancy' Kitchen.

Nancy's Kitchen is just a double-storey shop located not far from Geograper Cafe. When we reach there, around 12.30pm, it's already full house. Not very spacious inside. Better to make a reservation before you come. We wait for a while to be seated. Nancy's Kitchen also sell some nyonya kuih, cookies and paste.

Some of the Nyonya Kuih
Otak-otak - have little lala inside (RM10.00)
Fried Egg Cincalok (large) - RM10.00
Lemak Nenas Prawn (Medium) - Prawn curry with pineapple. Not spicy but sweet. Delicious. (RM27.00)
Assam pork (Large) - sour pork. Suitable to eat with rice. With this dish, I bet you can take 3 bowl of rice. But some of my friend comment that it's over sour. But it quite refreshing when whole table is curry and lemak. (RM20.00)

Chicken Curry (Medium) - please don't again fool by the look of this dish. This really not spicy. Very tasty. (RM15.00)

Fried Angle Bean (Medium) - Look very delicious but beware and don't tell me that I didn't warn you...this dish is SPICY!!!! hah....doesn't look like that right? I notice that nyonya dish cannot judge by its look. (RM10.00)

The food is nice and delicious. It didn't disappointed us at all.

Operating hour: please don't go there too late cause on the 1st day we reached there around 8pm, it's already closed.

We then go shop for souvenir. We cannot take more food anymore cause we ate too much at Nancy's Kitchen. We drop by San Shu Gong 三叔公, a corner shop that sell many confectionery for souvenir. Some of us were tire and so we decide to take rest and have some drinks in the cafe inside the shop, Lao Qian Ice Cafe 老钱咖啡馆

Iced coffee and Essence Lime Juice with Liquorice. The iced coffee is bitter and strong. The lime juice is quite refreshing. This is quite good because it can release pain from sore throat.

Address: 31, Jalan Hang Jebat (Jonker Street)

We were so tire and exhausted even coffee also can't wake us up. So we went back hostel to re-charge.

At night, we again go back to Tong Bee stall there to have some seafood and popiah. When we walk back to Jonker Street, we pass by the Medan Makan Boon Leong 双龙美食坊, there are many people queuing and waiting to take-away the Fried  Oyster. And it only meant for people to take-away. No dine-in. We were so curious so we order 1 pack. We wait for around 30 minutes and we get our food. We take few disposable chopstick and tasted the fried oyster on the spot. No wonder so many people willing to queue. It is really incredible, unexpectedly delicious!! wow!!  And it just RM6.00 per pack!!This one is highly recommended to all!

We walk back to Jonker Street. According to our itinerary, we should be gong to Jonker88 to have another meal. But when we reach there around 7pm, Jonker88 already closed. Therefore, we just have a walk at the night market at Jonker Street. Is a famous night market in Melaka. It open every Friday and Saturday. There have many souvenir stall, food stall and etc. Then we have a drink at Geographer Cafe, chit-chatting and enjoying the night view of night market. After that we went back to hostel.

Already 12 midnight but night still young and some of my friend feel hungry and suggested we went for Satay celup. This is the only shop we can think of that open till midnight. We decide on quite a sudden, so we just go there on our sleeping garments (hahahaha.....). Capitol Satay 佳必多沙爹, famous satay celup shop in Melaka. Is a corner shop with just 10-12 tables inside. Because it's too famous, people are willing to queue for even 3 hours to eat there. And you can see there always have a long queue outside the shop even at midnight. We still have to wait for 45 minutes for us to be served. Satay Celup is same like steamboat. Only different is they use the satay tipping sauce to boil the food. Many variety of food, all are on skewers, such as squid, prawn, meat ball, raw meat, bean curd, vegetables and etc. And is only RM0.80 per stick.
